About the class

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as Marine Engine Mechanics. This program also provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in this occupation. The course content will include the following: service and repair of four-stroke and two-stroke cycle engines and outboard motors; and service and repair of boating accessories. With regard to the above, course content will include electrical systems, fuel systems, power transfer systems, ignition systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, drive systems and boat and trailer rigging. The course content will also include training in communication, leadership, human relations, employability skills, and safe, efficient work practices.

In accordance with Rule 6A-10.040, the minimum basic skills grade level required for postsecondary adults in this program is: Mathematics 9.0; Language 9.0; Reading 9.0. This grade level number corresponds to a grade equivalent score obtained on a state designated basic skills exam. The typical length of the program for the average student is 1350 hours. The student, upon completion of the program, will receive a certificate of completion issued by the school, provided the student has passed the basic skills test.

You will be issued a Course Framework and competency check-off list. The instructor will show the student the procedures for having competencies signed off. In order to have a competency signed off it will be completed by either lectures, written tests, sketching and labeling, or hands-on activities in the lab. At no time may any of the equipment, tools, service manuals, or training films leave the lab or classroom.

All students are expected to clean their work areas and assist with general lab and classroom clean up when necessary. All adult are required to purchase the text book for the program and bring it to class still sealed in its original wrapping. High school students will have a text book provided for them. ALL STUDENTS are required to bring a pencil or a pen and paper to every class.

All students are also required to keep a notebook to document lab activities, additional handouts provided by the instructor, returned tests and all required sketches. At no time will the school purchase parts for a student’s engine, trailer, boat, oar any boating accessories. When a student brings a project to class, he is responsible for all parts and fluids. All projects must be approved by the instructor before they are brought to class.

The instructor will make himself available to students who require extra help or want to spend additional time on a project or lab assignment. This must be done by appointment as the instructor periodically must attend meetings or parent teacher conferences.

GRADING POLICY FINAL GRADES Your grade for each term (9 Weeks) will be based upon class work in the following areas:

Employability: Your ability to get along with your peers, following instructor’s directions, attending class on time and being prepared. This means bringing your text book, paper and a writing utensil.

Lab Work: Your ability to perform assigned lab work efficiently, SAFELY, and cleaning of your work area. All lab assignments are to be documented and saved by the student to assist in the filling out of the competency check off list. Written Tests: Most tests will require a minimum passing score of 60%, but there are certain tests that will require a passing score of 100%, such as safety.
